Beer Survey Trips


12 members joined the beer survey walk around Ripley on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August, visiting the Red Lion, Thorn Tree, Pear Tree, The Keys, Cock Inn and Talbot Taphouse and enjoyed a good variety of interesting beers.  The Midland was closed all afternoon so we were not able to include it as planned.


The following beers were noted –

Red Lion – 8 beers from Great Heck brewery including Amish Mash, Washington Red, Voodoo Mild, Shankar IPA , Black Jesus + 3 others, Sharps Doombar, Greene King Abbot Ale, Theakstons Ruddles County

Thorn Tree – Everards Stateside Rye, Thornbridge Kipling, Falstaff Bruce Bairnsfather, Landlocked Honey Chisel, Leatherbritches Lemongrass and Ginger

Pear Tree – Greene King Abbot Ale and IPA, Hydes Finest, Black Sheep Special Bitter, Belhaven 80/ Scottish Ale, Hook Norton Old Hooky + many more outside at the beer festival

The Keys – Marston’s Pedigree, North Star Keys Bitter

Cock Inn – Dancing Duck Ay Up, Brampton Golden Bud,

Talbot Taphouse – Milestone Colonial Pale Ale, Amber Barnes Wallis, Summer Light, Original Stout, Imperial IPA, Derbyshire Gold + 8 real ciders


11 members joined the minibus survey trip on Saturday 12th September, visiting the Nag’s Head and The Green House, Belper, The Village Inn and Holly Bush, Marehay, Traveller’s Rest and Hunter Arms, Kilburn.


The following beers were noted –

Nag’s Head – Marstons Pedigree, Ringwood Bitter, Brakespear Oxford Gold

Green House – St Austell Proper Job, Robinsons Trooper, Marstons Pedigree

Village Inn – Hardy Hanson Olde Trip, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Greene King Abbot Ale

Holly Bush – Little Bush Fuggler and Strawberry Y Knott, Castle Rock Screech Owl, Greene King Abbot Ale, Marstons Draught Bass

Traveller’s Rest – Marstons Pedigree and EPA, Shepherd Neame Spitfire

Hunter Arms – Marstons Pedigree, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Titanic Plum Porter, Oakham Citra, Dancing Duck Hunters, Kelham Island Atomic Blonde


The next free minibus survey trip will be on Saturday 10th October and there are currently places available – please contact me if you are interested.  The final trip of the year will be on Saturday 14th November.


The Beer Festival Volunteers’ Party will be held at the Strutt Club, Campbell St, Belper on Saturday 12th December – details to be confirmed nearer the time.


Anne Kennedy has organised an Amber Ramble from Belper to Wirksworth, returning to Makeney by bus, on Saturday 3rd October and the poster and details have been circulated by email.


There are lots of local beer festivals during October including Amber Brewery Fest and the Poet and Castle this weekend, Ashbourne CAMRA Festival @ Town Hall 8th-10th, Nottingham CAMRA Festival @ Nottm Castle 7th-10th, Matlock & Dales CAMRA Festival @ County Hall 23rd-24th, Holly Bush, Makeney 22nd-24th, Mansfield & Ashfield CAMRA Festival @ Post House, Sth Normanton 29th Oct – 1st Nov, Chesterfield & District CAMRA Market Festival @ Market Hall 30th-31st
