Social Secretary Report – August 2015

Beer Survey Trips

17 members went on the survey trip on Saturday 15th August and visited the Cross Keys, Belper, the French Horn, Codnor Inn and Marquis of Ormonde at Codnor, the Sitwell Arms and Old Oak at Horsley Woodhouse.  The Codnor Inn has reopened this year after refurbishment by the new owners and is a very comfortable, friendly pub.

The following beers were noted –

Cross Keys – Batemans Golden Keys, Castle Rock Red Riding Hood, Marston’s Draught Bass, Batemans XXXB + Strawberry Cider

French Horn – Greene King IPA and Abbot Ale, Moreland Old Speckled Hen, Timothy Taylor Landlord + Old Rosie Cider

Codnor Inn – Fuggle Bunny Orchard Gold, Castle Rock Elsie Moe and James Shipston, Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven + Old Rosie and Amnesia Cider

Marquis of Ormonde – Sharps Doombar, Dancing Duck Abduction + 2 real ciders

Sitwell Arms – Brains Rev James, Marston’s Draught Bass, Greene King Abbot Ale

Old Oak – Leadmill Fluffer, Blue Morpho and Celtic Porter, Middle Earth Rivendell, Cottage Golden Arrow, Bottlebrook Rapture and American Girl, Salamander Warriors of Light and Fat Ogre + several others in main bar + real ciders

The next survey trip will be on Saturday 12th September.

On Saturday 8th August a group of us enjoyed a sunny afternoon walking around the outskirts of Chesterfield and visited the White Swan (RAW brewery tap), Chesterfield Alehouse (twice), Barlow Brewery Tap, Tramway Tavern (Brampton brewery tap), Britannia and Rose & Crown.  We were joined for part of the afternoon by two Chesterfield CAMRA Committee members.

On Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August, we will be doing a survey of the real ale pubs in Ripley, meeting at the Red Lion around 12.30.  This will mean we don’t have to fit these town centre pubs in on Saturday night minibus trips when they are always very busy.  The Pear Tree will be holding a beer festival so we will spend some time there.
