Winter Festival Outing

As a celebration of that rare event where none of us were actually working at a festival, six members of the branch took the opportunity to take a day trip to Leicester CAMRA Beer Festival. Utilising various buses and trains, we met up shortly after opening time on a wet and occasionally snowy Friday.

The festival is held in the very modern Haymarket Theatre which is situated above a shopping centre and was a bit tricky to locate but, with the help of locals and a security guard, we managed to find it.    The entrance procedure was very smooth with entry, glasses and tokens all located together and made easier by the fact that there were no queues at the time we arrived.

Some 210 beers listed in the programme were mostly available and only a few were sold out.   The layout of the festival was good with the beer, cider and gin bars located on the stage, along with traditional bar games.

There was a separate area for locally brewed beers and all the others lined up in alphabetical order and also numbered in the programme for easy ordering.  The theatre stalls were used for seating so we were able to peruse the programme and chat to friends in comfort.

Breweries included 18 locals and some 97 from further afield, offering a very good mix to suit all tastes and the colour coding of the brews was a nice touch.

A good choice of hot and cold food was on offer in the foyer area.

Overall a great day out and by the time we left it had finally stopped raining!
